Welcome to Traffic Calming in Minnesota.
City and County Engineers are receiving an increasing number of requests by citizens to "calm" traffic in their communities. Engineers are also receiving inquiries from elected officials and citizens about the effectiveness of proposed traffic calming techniques.
Traffic calming is still relatively new in the United States with few traffic calming engineering standards to reference. Numerous projects have been implemented across the United States and internationally, but there is a common concern that traffic calming projects successfully implemented in other areas of the country may not be effective in Minnesota due to the installation and maintenance challenges presented by the Minnesota climate. At the same time, there are many agencies within Minnesota that have implemented traffic calming techniques and could provide insight regarding the effectiveness of their projects to other agencies and interested individuals. But other agencies are unaware that these projects exist. Therefore, this site was developed, with the specific purpose of disseminating information on traffic calming projects that have been implemented in the State of Minnesota.
